The United States Army M548A1 is an unarmored full-tracked vehicle that was designed to provide transport of ammunition and general supplies to field artillery units. The vehicle is capable of carrying a 6 ton payload with room for four personnel seated in the cab. This vehicle is based on the same chassis as the M113 family of armored carriers. The large rear door provides easy loading of material. The tracked chassis provides the ultimate cross country and amphibious capabilities. It is operated by a driver and an assistant. The M548, M548A1, M1015 and M1015A1 Full-tracked vehicles are a lightweight unarmored version of the M113 family of vehicles. Similar to the M 548 and the M1015 / M1015A, the M-548 A1 added Improved Cooling, as well as an Improved Suspension (which added additional shock absorbers, grease fittings, bumper stops on the shocks, etc.)
A quote from the manual states:
"The improved cooling allows the carrier to operate at a lower temperature. The improved suspension system provides a smoother ride and greater cross country capability."
This massive vehicle starts and runs superbly. It drives amazingly well, smoother than other track vehicles. For several years it has been used in an annual 4'th of July Parade in Watsonville, CA.
Other features include:
• Removable Cab and Cargo Cover.
• Weapon Racks.
• Material Handling Kit (includes chain hoist with an overhead beam, etc.
• 24,000 lb. capacity winch.
• 6 cylinder, V-type, 2 stroke Diesel Engine.
